SJAM Weekly Newsletter
Week At A Glance: May 25 - 29, 2026
Dear Mustang Families,
Please forward this message to your child’s email.
Congratulations to our SJAM Band students on their outstanding performance at the Spring Concert this past Thursday. It was wonderful to see their growth, confidence, and commitment come to life on stage. Our Grade 9s playing ‘Best Day of My Life’ reminded us of the significant growth they have made over three years, while all three Grades played ‘Shut Up and Dance with Me’ leading to spontaneous dancing by some audience members. Under the guidance of Ms. Armstrong, our talented and dedicated music teacher, each musician contributed to a performance that showcased both their individual skills and their ability to work together as an ensemble. We are proud of the effort and pride these students demonstrated.
It is with great regret that we announce the planned Riverwatch field trip for our Grade 8 and 9 students was cancelled at 11:00 am this morning due to the heavy rainfall in Calgary: Weather Network Update. We will work with organizers to potentially reschedule for a later date and will update impacted students and families as soon as possible. Student safety remains our top priority.
Gentle reminder:
- Grade 9 Farewell Speeches are due to Mr. Jones (sdjones@cbe.ab.ca) on Monday June 1st. This is for Grade 9 students who would like to speak at the farewell. Full details two weeks ago.
- Sunshine is supposed to return to Calgary on Thursday, in time for our Track and Field Meet. Given last year’s gathering was cancelled for forest fire smoke, we are hopeful a beautiful day of sunshine emerges. Further details in 'athletics' below.
We are pleased to have MRU Nursing Practicum students offer a wellness fair called ‘CAMP WELLNESS’ on Thursday June 4 and Friday June 5. The goal is to create a practical, student friendly intervention that responds directly to SJAM survey findings while keeping the tone engaging and appropriate for junior high students. The MRU nurses found: Many SJAM students indicated that stress or anxiety affects their school day at least sometimes. Sleep was also an important theme across grades. Students strongly identified the need for more support in choosing healthy coping strategies when friendships falter. At the same time, many students reported knowing at least one adult at school they can talk to, which aligns with the importance of trusted relationships.
The format will include three main stations based on the top themes.
- Station 1: Friendship and relationships
- Station 2: Stress, anxiety, and healthy coping strategies
- Station 3: Sleep and wellness
SJAM teachers had the opportunity to sign up for one of the 14 sessions being offered. All SJAM students are also eligible to attend Thursday at lunch for an open session. Location: room 23 (across from Mr. Dougan).
At SJAM, we pride ourselves on being good neighbors. With the weather warming up, many of our local young people are hanging out in the community. Not everyone who comes into our neighbourhood is here just to buy groceries, gas or fast food, and as a neighbourhood, we all need to be vigilant in keeping not just our schools, John G Diefenbaker, Sir John A MacDonald and St. Helena, clean and safe. We have a wonderful team of dedicated police officers in District 3 who have been very supportive when called to support our schools and our community. If there is something you feel is making you, your family or the community unsafe, please call: the NON- Emergency line of 403-266-1234; if there is a crime in process call 9-1-1; and if worried about your identity when reporting please call Calgary Crime Stoppers: 1-800-222-8477. You could also email your concern to the following email: cps@calgarypolice.ca You are welcome to reach out to SJAM to see if we can offer support as well. We join you in wanting to build safe and welcoming communities in Calgary.
