Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,
Due to higher than anticipated enrolment growth at North Trail High School, the school is currently over capacity and unable to accommodate all students who live within the designated school boundary. For this reason, enrolment will continue to be capped, and the overflow will remain in place.
New registrations for North Trail High School that cannot be accommodated for the 2025-2026 school year and beyond will be overflowed to:
A lottery will be held on Feb. 12, 2025, for all incoming Grade 10 students. Students who are unsuccessful in the lottery will be overflowed to Crescent Heights High School and placed on a call-back list based on priority designation and the date and time of their registration. Any new students entering Grades 11 and 12 in the 2025-2026 school year will be overflowed to Crescent Heights High School and placed on the call-back list. Visit the lottery page for details on the lottery process, deadlines and how the CBE determines priority.
No Changes for Current Students at North Trail High School
Students currently attending North Trail High School will remain at the school for the 2024-2025 school year and beyond, provided they do not move or reside outside the school boundary.
How do I register for the current school year?
Any new registrations for Grades 10-12 from students living within the designated school boundary must still register for North Trail High School. A cap on enrolment and overflow to Crescent Heights High School was created for the 2024-2025 school year. New registrations for this school year will continue to be overflowed to Crescent Heights High School.
Students overflowed to Crescent Heights High School will be placed on a call-back list. Students may receive an offer to transfer back to North Trail High School if space becomes available. For more information on how to register, visit our website.
How do I register for the next school year?
Grade 9 students attending the regular program at a CBE will be designated to North Trail High School for the 2025-2026 school year and automatically entered into the Grade 10 lottery. Students designated to North Trail High School who are enrolled in an Alternative program, such as a language program, at a CBE school will need to inform their principal that they wish to attend North Trail High School next year before the lottery deadline (Feb. 11, 2025, at 12 p.m.) to be included in the lottery.
New students registering for Grades 10 who are not attending a CBE school but are designated to North Trail High School for the 2025-2026 school year must still register for the school before the lottery deadline to be included in the lottery. For more information on how to register, visit our website.
If a student with a sibling already at North Trail High School is unsuccessful in the lottery, the student must still attend Crescent Heights High School. If families would like both students to attend the same school, the older sibling has the option of transferring to Crescent Heights High School.
New Grade 11 and 12 regular program students must still register for North Trail High School. Students who cannot be accommodated for the 2025-2026 will be overflowed to Crescent Heights High School.
What is a call-back list?
If space at North Trail High School becomes available during the school year, it will be offered to students on the call-back list attending their designated overflow school.
Students will be removed from the call-back list if they move out of the North Trail High School boundary, transfer from their designated overflow school, or decline a call-back to North Trail High School.
What other measures are being taken to address high enrolment at North Trail High School?
The Government of Alberta approved six new modular classrooms for North Trail High School, estimated to be installed in the spring of 2025. These classrooms are intended to ease congestion in the school and provide additional instructional and programming space.
Is there transportation for students attending the overflow school?
High school students are assigned to Calgary Transit. Routes can be accessed through the “Plan a Trip” tool. School express routes may not be provided, and students may be required to take regular routes. While CBE works collaboratively with Calgary Transit to offer routes to CBE students, Calgary Transit makes decisions on service levels based on available space and resources.
