Dear Mustang Families:

Thank you to the many families that joined us at our Meet the Teacher this past Thursday. Gratitude is extended to our MC’s, Mariam and Austin, as well as the many student volunteers, who donated their time to ensure the event flowed smoothly.  All families are encouraged to reach out for support as we collectively work to generate the conditions for your child to be successful:  Staff List.

For caregivers interested in learning more about our school, you are welcome to join our School Council members on Tuesday.  September’s meeting will take place from 6:30 – 8:00 pm in the Learning Commons.  A full agenda will be released on Tuesday morning.

Our dedicated and hard-working School Council parents have started a fundraiser you may be familiar with:  Fun Lunches.  This is optional.

Optional SJAM Merchandise is also available until Friday September 20.

Leadership Update:  Ms. Hudson and Ms. Ralph

Terry Fox – We all enjoyed some crisp air and beautiful sunshine on Friday for our annual Terry Fox run.  Thanks to generous donations from staff and students, we met our goal and the Physed team showed up in style to celebrate.  If you would still like to make a donation, you can do so here:  Terry Fox Foundation.  Thank you to our families who have donated.

Tug o’ War – It’s happening this Tuesday (Grade 9), Wednesday (Grade 8) and Thursday (Grade 7) on the back field at lunch.  Students are encouraged to come out and support their home rooms!

Welcome Dance and Spirit Day - We are so excited for our first school dance, scheduled for Thursday September 21 from 2:30 - 5:30.

  • Tickets will be on sale at lunch and after school Monday Sept. 16- Wednesday Sept 18 and will be $4. All proceeds go to support the Terry Fox foundation.
  • Please email Ms. Hornby (mahornby@cbe.ab.ca), Mr. Rachid (morachid@cbe.ab.ca) (A-K), Mr. Jensen (lgjensen@cbe.ab.ca) (L-Z) if you would like your child to be exempt from the dance fee.
  • On the afternoon of the dance, students who have purchased tickets will be called down to the gym starting at 2:30 pm.
  • Those who choose not to join us for the dance will be dismissed at the regular bell time of 2:51 pm.

We very much appreciate home support in helping us have a successful event. Students earn the privilege to attend school dances by supporting the CBE Student Code of Conduct. Rights and responsibilities go hand in hand, and to have successful dances, we must have a “welcoming, caring, respectful and safe environment that respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging for all members of our school community.” With that said, we want to communicate some specific expectations for our dance.  We appreciate parent support in discussing these expectations at home:

  • Come to the dance to enjoy time with friends and to dance. Be present with each other in a positive way – phones and all bags/purses are to be kept in lockers and students will not have access to them for the whole dance. Surround yourself with people who you have positive relationships with…and dance.
  • Be at school to be at the dance.  Students must be present for all classes on the day of the dance, unless they have a medical/dentist appointment. "Regular" attendance in classes from the beginning of the school year is also a determining factor in being a guest at school dances; extenuating circumstances such as illness or family events will be taken into consideration.
  • Plan to stay for the duration of the dance. Students are expected to stay at the dance once they arrive. If a student needs to leave early for an appointment etc., s/he/they must have written parent permission to leave at a specific time, arranged prior to arrival. The student must check with the supervising adult with whom they made these arrangements before they depart.
  • Food and drink need to be consumed in the front foyer. Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle. Limited snacks will be available for purchase.  Proceeds go to the Terry Fox Foundation.

Athletics Update: Mr. Jones

  • Soccer:  Team selection is complete with games beginning this week.  The boys kick the season off with a home game on Monday with the girls playing at home on Tuesday.  Spectators are of course welcome to support our athletes.
  • Cross-Country:  Congrats to all athletes and coaches who braved the inclement weather last week to compete admirably at the first cross-country meet of the season.  It was a successful competition with all athletes finishing the course and many athletes finishing in the top 20, top 10 and even top 5 of their respective divisions.  Great job!  The next meet is this Tuesday, Sept 17 at West Confederation Park.  Good luck!
  • Basketball:  Basketball tryouts are in full swing.  Thanks to everyone for coming out thus far.  Please remind your child to reach out to coaches should they not be able to make a tryout due to illness/ medical appointment etc.

Please refer to our SJAM Athletics site for updated information throughout the school year.
