Dear Mustang Families:
Our Leadership students and faculty generated an energizing week of community building. During Wednesday’s homeroom, learners immersed themselves in the legacy of Terry Fox alongside a reflection on his Metis heritage and his significant contributions to cancer research. Families can still donate through: The Terry Fox School Foundation Page .
The ‘I am Canadian’ spirit day culminated in our first school dance of the year. The gym was vibrant with many excited Mustangs. Congratulations to the many students who earned a free dance ticket, from a staff member, for engaging in acts of compassion to start the school year.
The sun cooperated on Friday, with our annual tradition: the Terry Fox Run. A significant number of students and staff members ran for the entire hour, while 100% of students and faculty walked the route.
Leadership students and faculty are also hosting another Mustang tradition this week:
- Tuesday: Grade 9 Tug of War at lunch
- Wednesday: Grade 8 Tug of War at lunch
- Thursday: Grade 7 Tug of Wat at lunch
This week, we will build towards the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. This federal statutory holiday was created through legislative amendments made by Parliament.
“Wisdom Wednesday” homeroom – Compassion Recognition – Teachers will start the homeroom by gifting an orange shirt to a student they have observed showing compassion.
“Thoughtful Thursday”: students can participate in beading through the Beading Club (room 25) at lunch time.
Friday: Orange Shirt Day commemorates the legacy of Indigenous residential schools in Canada and raises awareness about their intergenerational trauma. The day is rooted in the story of Phyllis (Jack) Webstad, whose orange shirt, a gift from her grandmother, was taken on her first day at a residential school. Wearing an orange shirt on this day symbolizes the message that "Every Child Matters," honoring the Indigenous children who suffered in these institutions, those who survived, and the lasting impacts on communities.
Note: Monday September 29 (Non-Instruction Day) and Tuesday September 30 (National Day for TRC) - no school for students
SJAM Clubs are an excellent way for every student to engage in new activities with like-minded new friends. See link for specific times and locations: link.
