Dear Mustang Families:
Thank you to the many parents who joined us at our School Council Meeting and volunteered at our Welcome Dance. We wish all our parents could see the excitement and joy on the dance floor! If you or an older sibling (over 18 years old) would like to support a school event, we welcome your support. Please follow this process. Ms. Sherry Reynolds (sareynolds@cbe.ab.ca) helps interested volunteers navigate the required paperwork.
Our parents are also working behind the scenes to support school events: please see this optional fundraiser link. Scroll down to see information on Healthy Hunger (Wednesday at lunch) and Cookies/Tea/Coffee (Quebec trip).
On Monday morning, Sir John A Macdonald will be joining other schools in welcoming our School Trustee, Ms. Laura Hack, the MLA for Calgary-Beddington, Ms. Amanda Chapman, and Ms. Tori Healing, our Area Director. They are hoping for a 30-minute maximum visit to “connect with students and take any questions related to the Provincial Governments role and Trusteeship in relation to Education. To see capacity implications, to highlight any unique programming at the schools and celebrate any student or staff lead initiatives that are of significance.” Formal visits for 8-2 (Ms. Kwan HUM) and 9-6 (Ms. Zakus HUM) have been pre-arranged. There is a possibility our guests will visit other classes. What question(s) do you wish your child could ask? If you want your child included in these visits, please email Ms. Hornby (mahornby@cbe.ab.ca) by Sunday at 9:00 pm.
This past Friday night, a generous donor from The Impact Society reached out to share that they can donate orange t-shirts in recognition of Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th. Given there is a CBE holiday on Monday September 30, SJAM students are encouraged to wear their ‘Every Child Matters’ orange shirts and ribbon skirts on Thursday. The donated orange shirts will be dropped off early next week. If your child comes home with a new ‘orange shirt’, it came from this donor.
- The CBE is participating in the City of Calgary Orange Shirt Day events: Monday, Sept. 30, 9 - 10:30 a.m. at The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland, 750 9 Ave. S.E.. Enjoy presentations from various speakers, including the Mayor, Indigenous Elders and school board representatives at The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland (previously Fort Calgary). A blessing from an Elder will start the event and Indigenous dancers will entertain during. Everyone is strongly encouraged to wear orange as a sign of support and to honor the children who didn't return from residential schools across the country.
- The above link lists several other events taking place in the City of Calgary next Monday.
- At SJAM, our teachers have been leading activities in their classrooms to commemorate Indian residential school victims, honor survivors and their families, and commit to acting on reconciliation remembering the children.
- Every SJAM student is encouraged to join us at our daily smudge on Thursday morning at 7:50 am in the Infinity Garden: Smudging letter from Sept 1
